EL 21 de agosto en Quassy Amusement Park, se dieron cita mas de 760 jovencitos y sus familias para celebrar la Octava Liga de la Juventud del Caribe de Bridgeport, con el objetivo de compartir con estos jóvenes que pertenecen a la asociación. John Torres, presidente de BCYL (siglas en inglés de la Liga), agradeció la asistencia y el compromiso con el programa.
Torres dijo que construir la juventud de hoy, es construir los líderes de mañana. Mencionó también que se debe primero respetar a los padres y estudiar muy duro en la escuela. "Necesitan estudiay y trabajar muy diro para mejorar sus vidas y la de su ambiente", agregó Torres.
"Building today’s youth; tomorrow’s leaders," said Torres. He continued to add that the youth must first respect their parents and study hard at school. His vision is to provide youth with an opportunity to succeed academically and to gain a greater sense of giving back to the community.
Raymond Torres, (no relation to John) Vice President and Executive Director of Casey Family Services and a sponsor of the BCYL programs shared a few inspirational words.
For some people they believe that success only happens to lucky people.
"You need to work and study hard in school so that you can become one of the lucky ones or increase your odds of becoming luckier," said Torres of Casey Family Services.
This is not just your average sports league. This is a league where the coaches don’t only care about what the youth learn on the field, but more importantly, what they learn off it.
The BCYL stresses the importance of an education by rewarding the youths with trips to a professional baseball or basketball game for students who obtain honor roll in their report cards. All of the coaches involved encourage the youth to obtain A's and B's in school.
This year 100 BCYL youth, coaches, teachers and parents will be taking a bus trip to Citi Field in New York to watch the Mets play as a reward for what the youth achieved in the class rooms.
Willie Cora, Vice President of BCYL had the pleasure of introducing and acknowledging the youth and their coaches on stage. The thrill of being recognized was evident by observing the ear-to-ear smiles on many of the youth's when their names were announced.
They were presented with trophies and awards. They ate hot dogs and hamburgers and enjoyed an all-access VIP bracelet to Quassy's amusement rides.
